The myth, the man, the legend is something that seems to be lost in translation these days.Only the true few who have broken free from the reins of the daily grind to appreciate truly what this means. An iconic whisper of hardened days gone by that have resurrected forth in a cult following of like minded people hinged around that one true feeling of unwinding and letting it all roll. That was the mantra of Norman Keith Collins - the man and the brand that became Sailor Jerry.Known for his demeanor and good will towards others his iconic rough around the edges rockabilly pin up style flash came to life to those who literally wore it with hearts on their sleeves.A well known man with a mission of doing right! or don't do it at all type of attitude, that lifestyle on the edge just like the rum that it's known for - full of spice and straight to the point,Strong, bold, fast and clean - just the way he liked it.
It takes a certain type of person to fill those shoes and to keep that spirit alive and Arron Thomas, the Canadian Ambassador is no stranger to that creed. Thomas is committed to the lifestyle and the scene in and all around the West Coast to the heart of the City of Lights hanging out making things happen in the Toronto scene.A certain persona is definitely a job requirement to maintain the helm of this ship and his knowledge of blending and the brand is beyond any expectation.
His latest creation is a redone rocked out Ford Econoline called the "Punch Bowl" in the classic Black Cherry paint job pimped out shag carpeting and smooth as silk vinyl custom back bench.and engineered flooring. But what about the tear drop windows Arron? "Well it came that way and we built on to it as we went along,It had the original motor in amazing shape and built rocker style from the.get go.We needed to make the "Punch Bowl" as we needed a mobile brand home. It's part of this job and I'm just lucky enough to have a roll. The Punch Bowl is the ultimate party machine and I'm lucky enough to be that guy that has that gateway with people! why wouldn't I want to share it with people? I thought this is the ultimate way to pack friends and influences into one piece of awesomeness. I've been all around Ontario doing shows and promotions soon across Canada. We have other Sailor Jerry vehicles across Canada maybe someone in B.C might make a Winnebago or something? There's a strong outdoor type of culture there - and besides have you ever seen a Winnebago with Shag carpeting? Not to mention the sound system is 3000 watts of blow your mind" Can you turn it down? No but I can Turn it up".Clarion hooked us up with two banks in the benches of set of 10 inch dual voice coil over subs with 1500 W peak and 6 1/2 with the components in the walls. It's all powered by three Clarion power amps two amps for the subs and a single for the components. The guys at The Baitshop.ca hooked us with the custom screening of the logo on the inside that's bomb proof. Literally you can't scratch this shit off! We added in the custom LED lighting to give it that whole atmosphere and of course the window hood and the front scoop add to keeping it square after laying a solid patch with the American Racing custom rims."
So what about the spirit of the ride? Arron Thomas is no stranger to hitting the pavement and letting it roll 1200Km in a single day for the hell of it!."The Ultimate Ride would be from the Southern point of Baja through the Pacific Coast Highway all the way up through the Sea to Sky to Alaska.I would like to recreate an old F.L Harley though like a 48 or a 47 with a side car because I've never seen one of course done right with the Sailor Jerry logo on the car. Collins had one he had a 57 or a 58 I believe is the one he dropped while having a heart attack, got it back up and drove home, but it had a side car." A stare off into the distance as Arron starts to ponder. You can almost see the smoke from the train of demented crafting surge through his veins and looks back with a smile "Sidecar"..
"Shit it would be cool to recreate something he had or in general.Nobody does it anymore no one takes it to that level it's all about the chop". When asked what his preference is with the Sailor Jerry spiced Rum - "Dam my creation is Ginger beer and Sailor Jerry and yeah I like Daiquiri's I'm not afraid to say that and my all time fav though is Mai Tai's, have you tried Lana's here at the Shameful Tiki?"
And I will leave you with this: "Richard Bronson said "Take your dream and turn it into reality" and Sailor Jerry had a great quote that I love so much 'Good Work ain't cheap, and Cheap work ain't good, you put in what you get and if you don't put in enough you don't get enough'."
After standing outside for a some air and admiring the "Punch Bowl" mobile it was time to head in and catch up with the Shameful Tiki co-owner Alana Nogueda one of Toronto's upcoming hit mixologists and all around rad person to hang with. The Shameful Tiki opened up 8 months ago and is one of the craziest perfecto of drinks, food and entertainment; whether it just be the mad scientist behind the bar whipping up some of the most top notch Polynesian Drinks. When asked what on earth made my Mai Tai so amazing Alana responds "Well it's all about the creation of it in
1944 at Trader Vic's by Victor J Bergeron. It basically instills the importance of fresh Orgeat syrup which is made with almond syrup, lime juice and of course a really good product which is none less than Sailor Jerry of course. I partnered up with my business partner Rod Moore that built the Vancouver location. He built this place with like one other dude in something like 6 months. We are constantly adding to the decor though the Sailor Jerry Surf board that Arron got us that's rad.As long as it's Tiki related much the same with the drinks and food menu. There's the classics like the Mai Tai and the Pina colada's and the Singapore Sling but we amp things up sometimes with some creative mixology. And that's what the Mystery drinks here are tonight -samples of what's to come.
We want to stick to the theme of the Tiki and that being said with live music whether it be Surf or Rockabilly. We like to stand out from the rest and it's all about taking pride in that and just like being a professional chef we taste the drinks to make sure it's legit and mixed right,We don't want to just whip it and throw out - that would be wrong. Tonight we also have custom stuff we are doing alongside with Sailor Jerry for National Rum Day not only rum based specials but free merch,So who doesn't like free swag right? Especially one that's a badass replica of one of his tattoo designs. The guys over at the Baitshop.ca are pushing the ink tonight of course in the back with the screens."
The Baitshop.ca is a collective haven for like minded influences in the scene to bring their brand and vision to life.Inspired by founders Greg Chong and Greg Rodriguez it's not only a skate park but a successful art and print facility that focuses on the custom end of things. "If it's not skate decks it's band Merch and recently we ended doing a big Fest and that was rad same thing we are doing here.on the fly.It was for the love of music that we got it started and it just grew from there. The overall process that we got going with the screen and the heat curing it's about 30 seconds flat out.
