Everyone’s favourite kilted kings of Celtic badassery are set to descend on Canada for Saint Patrick’s month with label mates Raygun Cowboys and BOIDs along for the ride on select dates. You don’t want to miss this touring extravaganza as The Real McKenzies are renowned far and wide for their epically wild live performances where anything can happen and usually does.
INTERVIEW with the legendary Paulie McKenzie here:
J.B: Okay let’s start off with how was the amazing anniversary tour? And did anything oddly strange happen along the tour in typical insanity that seems to draw to you guys?
PAULIE: As it seems, strange excellent things seem to happen to us all the time. We played great shows to a wide variety of people. From Satanic Goth rockers to consecutive folkies.
If I were to make mention of each and every special event it would look like a book.
We love our strange and wonderful lives.0
J.B: I mean the steadfast trio has been going for quite some time in the lineup but you guys have broken many good men along the way, who’s on the lineup currently that’s brave enough to keep up?
PAULIE: Aspy on pipes, Dan Stenning on drums,
Danny McKenzie ( my son ) on guitar,
Andy Petersen on guitar, Troy Zak on Bass and PaulMckenzie on vocals. Everybody sings as well.
J.B: You guys are starting the tour in Vancouver then straight to Quebec and then working back?
PAULIE: We are in Quebec City now. We play here tonight, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Peterborough then we fly to Vancouver, get in the van and conquer Western Canada again, then it’s off to Europe for a couple of months then pre-production, record another album, and the whole shitstorm starts all over again in a really good way.
J.B: And this tour is like a Stomp records trifecta also on some shows with alternating label support Raygun Cowboys and BOIDS?
We love our label mates and Stomp staff as brothers and sisters. We really are a rock and roll family.
J.B: This tour is a continuation of the Two Devils Will Talk release are we going to see a mix of older songs with the new?
PAULIE: We took a poll on the internet as to what songs people wanted to hear. We have integrated them along with new songs to make a killer excellent set list. Why even mean old me likes it , and I don’t like anything.
J.B: It seems after every show I attend I can never remember the ending for some reason and the next morning is like fighting the beast away, what is the secret to sustaining the energy you guys put into every show? Does it take a special breakfast of champions?
PAULIE: Yes. Picketed Herring, red onion, caviar, grapefruit and good Polish vodka, good crackers and Fisherman’s Friends with sardines. Mix them all up in a bowl with raw eggs and gobble it all down then start drinking.
J.B: What’s next for the McKenzie’s are there talks of perhaps an E.P or new album in the works?
PAULIE: New album starts upon our arrival back to Canada after our Summer European Tour. EP possibly in between.
J.B: The new shirts look awesome I have the Tarton but I love the lion design?
PAULIE: I enjoy the new T shirt designs as well.
J.B: That new video for “One day” is amazing you do a lot of really cool videos on climatic photography from green rooms and time lapses?
PAULIE: We all love to work with cameras, any opportunity we have to do so we gleefully jump on.
J.B: As usual we always end with a famous book or quote that inspired your life anything come to mind?
PAULIE: One does come to mind and it has helped us through the trials and tribulations of this more than difficult lifestyle we have chosen.
“Don’t sweat the petty stuff, and always pet the sweaty stuff”.
On behalf of The Real McKenzies I wish to thank you for your time and also to bestow a huge welcome to one and all in terms of our concerts.
It can be said, without any exaggeration, that The Real McKenzies are a national treasure.
Founded in 1992 by the larger than life, punk-rock poet laureate, Mr Paul McKenzie, this merry band of miscreants has spent a quarter century circumnavigating the globe to bring the McKenzies gospel to an ever-adoring throng of rebels, scallywags and ne’er do wells. There’s not many bands that can boast of a twenty five year career as staggeringly adventurous, wildly tempestuous and utterly death-defying as The Real McKenzies. It would be a serious mistake to write them off as just another Celtic punk band. They are an unstoppable juggernaut of touring mayhem. A ferocious troupe of insanely talented minstrels, storytellers and entertainers melding traditional acoustic and electric to create a sound like no other. Their list of accolades is long. From sharing the stage with the likes of NOFX, Rancid, Flogging Molly, Metallica and Shane McGowan to appearing in film, books and video games to signing with the legendary Fat Wreck Chords, their story continues to grow.
And now, to celebrate their landmark twenty-fifth anniversary, The Real McKenzies return with their 10th and very best long-player to date. And that’s not hyperbole. This is an absolutely monumental giant of an album. "Two Devils Will Talk" is fourteen tracks of pure, unbridled audio revolution. The songs are rebellious, poignant and achingly heartfelt with an extra helping of Scottish charm and wit to boot. The recurring and very timely themes of Two Devils Will Talk are hope, perseverance and living your life to it’s fullest. Opening track “Due West” is an anthemic epic about moving forward and never looking back, while “Seafarers” is a rollicking tale that deals with accepting the fact that you can’t change how the waves roll, only how you roll through them. There’s even a glorious cover of Stan Rogers’ “Northwest Passage” and a spectacular reworking of “Scots Wha Ha'e” (one of the first ever Real McKenzies recordings). “Two Devils Will Talk” sees a resilient, triumphant and defiantly hopeful band at the very top of their game.
You may be asking yourself; how do I get in on what will surely be the party of the century? Well, fear not true believers, The McKenzies' ship will be embarking on massive tours across Canada, USA and Europe to bring the celebration to a stage near you in 2018. So raise a glass, raise a fist, or better yet, raise a little hell for twenty-five+ years of The Real McKenzies, and another one still for many more happy years to come!

“For over two decades, The Real McKenzies have been spreading their unique brand of Scotch-Canadian “fuck the rich and drain your glass” Celtic punk rock. Over the years, there have been a slew of imitators trying to ride their coattails, but all have failed to match the humor and energy of the original.” – New Noise Magazine
"The Real McKenzies do what they do best on this album. They have written a bunch of punk songs such as “One Man Voyage” and “One Day that have vibrant and anthemic vocal (and gang vocal) melodies mixed with blaring bagpipes on top of heavy-hitting, distorted guitars.” - Punknews
"I have to admit it was hard for me to pick a favourite song from this album. I listened to it for almost two days straight and from the magnificent cover of Stan Rogers’ “Northwest Passage” to the cheeky “Fuck the Real McKenzies” this album is just plain fun. There isn’t a bad song on it.” - CanadianBeats
"As always, The Real McKenzies deliver a prime example of the fun to be had in the raucous world of Celtic punk. Two Devils Will Talk reinforces that the sands of time have done little to dull The Real Mckenzies sharp edge.” - The PunkSite
